This is the most commonly used phorbol ester. It binds to and activates protein kinase C, causes an extremely wide range of effects in cells and tissues, and is a very potent mouse skin tumor promoter. Blumberg, P.M. Although PMA is quite toxic, it has shown anti-leukemic and anti-neutropenic activity in humans. Han, Z.T. et al.
